U.S. rejects bid to restore funding for DC scholarship program

I realize this is old news, but I'm reading the School Reform News article about this March 16 vote and just getting really frustrated! President Obama has made so many promises that he seems to have had no intention of keeping, yet the lamestream media allows him to get away with it.

With respect to education, Obama and…

The United States of Stupid

By Alan Caruba

In 1983, the National Commission on Excellence in Education released a report titled “A Nation at Risk” that documented nationwide failure in American schools. Not much has changed since then and the federal takeover of school curriculums and testing methods has mercilessly continued with the Bush administration’s No Child Left Behind and the Obama administration’s Race to the Top.

They are the top-down approaches to learning that have played a large part in… Continue

Part 3: Which will it be? Government control of education or school choice and parental empowerment - Nancy Thorner and Edward Ingold

A few days ago on Tuesday, September 4, a vast majority of American students have returned back to school to begin a new school year, even as a major city, Chicago, is on the verge of a teacher strike.

In reflecting upon the start of the school year, The Heritage Foundation posted a timely article by Amy Payne in its Morning Bell presentation for Tuesday, September 4th: "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of a New School Year". …

This is a post I paste on many education articles. Feel free to use it.

There is a very simple (and less expensive) way to fix the education system in America. Simply have all the money follow the child.

1. Let each state decide its standards, and fund every child equally ($6-7K for K-8, and $10K for HS) through a scholarship. Any school that meets a certain pass rate on those standards can redeem scholarships.

2. Convert every existing public school to an independent [501(c)3] Charter school run…

Part 2: Education spending and educational achievement are at odds - Nancy Thorner and Ed Ingold

When addressing the American people, or assemblies of teachers and their unions, President Obama is correct in his rhetoric that education may be the largest expense of state and local governments, but, as Obama has proposed in his 2013 budget, is there a need for even more money to be allocated?

As Obama related on July 28, 2011: "A world-class education is the single most important factor in determining not…

Competing for Hearts and Minds

On Monday North Carolina's education statistic bureaucrats sounded the alarm that homeschooling in the state has more than doubled during the last 10 years. The reaction from one Raleigh-area public school advocate, Ann Denlinger, is telling: "We need to approach public schools as a competitive…

Don't be chicken, just call for the end of public unionization

After bankrupting nations and states, why are we even allowing these organization to exist? Let's be clear.
Public employee unions don't provide ANY public services. They merely make public services more expensive.
Let's begin the campaign to shove these parasites out of the public sector.

'Republicans Sell Out Chicago Schoolkids'

Is Common Core, a federally established education program, supported by the EPA, coming to your local school distict?

In Part one posted on Thursday, August 30 -- The IEA continues to hold hostage with a heavy hammer -- addressed was the influence of the Illinois Eduction Association (IEA) in regard to contract negotiations which have broken down between my own District 115 board and high school teachers.

What has certainly slipped under the radar is an awareness that many school districts in Illinois have signed on to the Common Core State Standards Initiatives, with its promises to…

House Passes 'Edujobs' Bill, Unions Rejoice

The House of Representatives interrupted its summer break Tuesday to vote on the $26 billion Education Jobs and Medicaid Assistance Act. The House approved the controversial bill, 247-161, mostly along party lines. President Obama signed it immediately.

This gift to the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers was expected, unfortunately. The U.S. Senate passed the bill last week, after Maine Sens. Olympia Snowe (R) and Susan Collins (R) broke with…

Trouble in the Big Easy: NEA vs. the Obama Administration

While most of us were eating burgers, watching fireworks and, I hope, engaging in a bit of patriotic reading as well, the National Education Association was convening in New Orleans for its annual meeting. And, as the New York Times reports, the nation's largest teachers union is not happy with President Obama. No. Not… Continue

Don't Let Feds Control Local Education

A standardized national curriculum wouldn’t make California’s kids smarter or well equipped to compete in the global economy, or even better citizens. But a national, one-size-fits-all curriculum would be highly political, beset by special interest lobbying, and almost certainly diluted by teachers unions and education bureaucrats unaccountable to parents and voters.

Yet President Barack Obama, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, 48 governors – including Arnold = Schwarzenegger – and a… Continue
